Sept 10

Orange fungus on a log south of the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter.

September 11, 2001

Where were you on 9/11

While washing our clothes at a laundromat, the attendant brought out a radio for us to listen to the news. We all know what that news was. We later rented a hotel room to have the use of a TV and saw events at the World Trade Center unfold.

Sept 13

The deer of Shenandoah National Park can be curious. This one let me tough its nose.

Sept 13

A rather large horn worm - Not extremely exciting, but we don't see caterpillars this big in Michigan very often.

Sept 14

Nice view of Shenandoah National Park

Sept 14

He's a statue of hiking pride - Having fun at Little Stony Man
Cliffs of the Shenandoahs.

Sept 14

We had to take one of me too.

Sept 14

Just doing a little rock climbing. Okay, so he's standing on something.

Sept 16

No, I wasn't using a telephoto lens. This faun allowed me to get very close.

Sept 19

Climbing Humpback rocks

Sept 21

We slept in this cabin the night of the 20th. The door was unlocked.

Sept 21

Blue Moon of Harpers Ferry W. Virginia picked us up and took us to the National D-Day Memorial. We had some lunch first.

Sept 21

National D-Day Memorial.

Sept 21

Climbing the cliffs and barricades.

Sept 21

An artistic view of the beach phase of D-Day

Sept 21

Zoomed in on the action, notice water shooting up in the background to simulate bullets hitting the surf.

Sept 23

Blue Moon also took us to a mountain commune called Light Morning near Roanoke VA. The community is decreasing in size over the years, but it was one of the most interesting places we had visited.

Sept 23

The morning before we left the commune Marcus and I ground
wheat into flour to make pancakes for everyone, another unique experience. Members of the community are all vegans.

Sept 23

The Light Morning commune boasts a fantastic wood stove. They try to be as self sufficient as possible, using wood and solar power. We used this stove to make our pancakes.

Sept 24

Cold rain fell on us all day long and while hiking up a mountain
called The Priest. "If it ain't raining, we ain't training" was one of our army infantry sayings, but honestly we got into a shelter and
tried to dry up as soon as possible.

Sept 25

View across to Apple Orchard Mountain, and our where we were headed.

Sept 26

Cold morning on a bridge

Sept 28

This was a great shelter. We didn't stay here

Sept 29

Looking out from McAfees Knob.

Oct 1

Black Snake on the trail just past Dragon's Tooth - It was much bigger than it appears in the photo.

Black Snake on the trail just past Dragon's Tooth - It was much bigger than it appears in the photo.

Oct 1 Three goats surprised us on a ridge top. They wait for hikers to
come along and then lick the salty sweat.
Oct 1

Heading into Sinking Creek Valley.

Oct 3

Any Monarchs that still around were slowly dying off. Taking the photo was easy with their slow movements.

Oct 7

I think this was a ridge near Star Shelter, but I can't be certain.

Oct 7

More friendly goats.

Oct 8

Our first frosty morning - Are legs aren't that white, those are long johns.

Oct 8

The fall colors are coming out.

Oct 10

We stayed with George and Murray Ziegenfuss of Bland, VA the night of the 9th. They were very friendly and took us to Golden
Corral to eat.

Oct 10

Falls near VA615 and Bland, VA

Oct 10

The falls again after Murray dropped us off. We occasionally got self portraits to show any difference in appearance as the
months went on.

Oct 10

Chestnut Knob shelter is one of the only shelters with such an
open elevated view. It was great.

Oct 11

Meadow near Chestnut Knob

Oct 11

Just some nice Virginia scenery.

Oct 12

A flag and seating area was found in the middle of a green valley. They were the best fall colors yet.

Oct 15

Giggles and Twinkle Toes - Two of our favorite southbound hikers in Damascus Virginia. Giggles is voted "Best Legs" and Twinkle Toes, "Funniest Hiker."

Oct 15

That's one mighty pile of pooh! How did Marcus do that?

Oct 16

We slept under these Rhododendrons the night of the 15th on a leaf bed to get away from noisy people in the shelter nearby.

Oct 16

The next series of photos were taken in and near Grayson
Highlands Sate Park. It was one of the best areas to hike through, with wide open views, wild ponies, rocky outcroppings, etc. The hiking itself was relatively easy as well.

Oct 16

Wild pony of Grayson Highlands State Park - It kept falling asleep on me.

Oct 16

Still in Grayson Highlands, the weather got bad, cold and wet, so we sought shelter in this....shelter.

Oct 16

Buzzard Rocks - Very windy, but a great place to relax.

Oct 17

Guys at Lost Mt. Shelter. These cool guys had some boose to celebrate Marcus's 21 birthday. We slept behind the shelter and got a little snow.
